This probably isn’t the “nomadic” lifestyle you’re thinking about but I’m a helicopter mechanic in the summer. I travel around wherever the work takes me. Rarely in the same place for long. Not complete freedom but definitely nomadic by definition.

software, nomadic since 2019, kids are out of college, freedom … ????

I worked as a campground host, did the sugar beet harvest, and all kinds of odd gigs while living in and slowly traveling with my travel trailer.

Met a guy who lived in Thailand who ran a couple of affiliate marketing websites. He had a couple of apartments, was doing well for himself.

Wannabeballer321:

How much did he make? How did he make money from affiliate marketing?

hallerz87:

I don’t know how much he made. Enough to own an apartment and an Airbnb on Koh Samui. Affiliate marketers make money by driving web traffic to partner websites. He would create a website and host links to advertisers’ websites, such as online casinos. If someone clicks that link and deposits money, then he gets a cut.

This is from 2017 and I don't know how easy it would be to get into a similar job but my old camp director essentially did this.

The camp was open seasonally, for a total of about 6 months out of the year and the other 6 months he would just travel. The salary wasn't crazy, ($60k) but both food and living expenses were already provided while camps were in session and so it was pretty easy to save money.

He had his own tiny, cozy cabin and the food was delicious too. Then when camps weren't in session, dude just lived life on the road. Rinse and repeat, over and over.

PreciousBasketcase:

Sounds like a good way to live.

ObiMemeKenobi:

I think it works if that's the lifestyle you're seeking. Anything like starting a family might be hard.

Imaginary_Rabbit_:

What kind of camps and what roles pay 60k for just 6 months of work? That’s great pay!

ObiMemeKenobi:

It was YMCA camp. During the school year they did nature/science camps for students and then during the summer they hosted various non-profits. The guy I was talking about was the camp director.

Imaginary_Rabbit_:

What kind of qualifications do you have to have for a position like that? It sounds awesome.

ObiMemeKenobi:

For my boss, none lmao. He worked there since he was 18 and just slowly moved up the ladder. He was in his mid-30s at this point. A lot of the folks I met during my time there were like that.

There’s a few different approaches that I’ve used to live a life of travel while not being financially blessed enough to be unemployed while traveling.

WHF/remote job. This one is pretty obvious, but having a job that has the ability to be worked from anywhere, so you can travel and just need a wifi connection. I’ve had luck working remote with more modern/progressive tech-based jobs like consulting companies.

Jobs that involve a lot of travel. I worked for a consulting company doing soil sampling and got to travel around to many countries. There are many types of traveling jobs, even just jobs that have professional development budgets that allow you to go to conferences.

Take a job in a location you’ve always wanted to travel to (easier if it is within your own country for visa reasons). For example, I was from the east coast and had always wanted to travel to the mountains and do cowboy shit. So I just got a regular old job in a city near the mountains did a bunch of cowboy shit on the weekends and evening and it was awesome. Spending extended periods of time in your travel destination (ie taking a yearlong job contract there) is actually one of the most rewarding types of travel.

A job at some kind of company that has offices worldwide or country-wide. While working at a big consulting company I was able to transfer to a few different office locations and work/live in various places.

infiniteawareness420:

Artist/Designer

I need to be available for meetings and hit my deadlines, there is definitely a requirement for being reliable and predictable but I can do it anywhere, anytime.

Really any modern white collar job can be done remote now. All you need is a laptop, connection, phone, and predictable / accessible office hours. My entire employer is remote.

MrMackSir:

Working as a consultant at one of the big 5 can be "nomadic."

You have to go to the client's location for the length of the engagement. You can stay over or fly home. I knew people who did this who had their things in storage (no apartment). Would fly to where they stored their things to switch out clothes while crashing at a friend's or family's place. Leave for another month at a new client. Rinse and repeat for 3 years.

Fine-Chard-1276:

I was a commercial diver a while back and if i was in one place for 3 months it was a long time. Im a traveling wilderness paramedic now working on my mountaineering guide certs. Any of those are pretty nomadic.

damechurppalater:

I live a pretty global and nomadic life. Best way to do it I've found is contract work, ie a job that only lasts 6 months or a year etc, and you apply for jobs you'd enjoy or fit your career and/or education in places you think are interesting, then you get to live like a local for a bit (stay on longer if you want and can). Sure remote work is maybe an 'easier' way to do it but only if you actually can get one of those jobs.

I was in skilled trades before and honestly didn't enjoy it too much. But it allowed for a solid 6 months on 6 months off lifestyle until work got more competitive to find. Now in pipeline surveying 3 weeks on 1 week off for 7-9 months then off in winter.

Earl_your_friend:

I did security for 3 years and was surprised at how easy it was to get temp work. They were actually excited that I'd travel to them and sleep on site. I'd work ten hours. Go to sleep and be there at 6 am waiting to get started. Once you start working and have state certification, they rarely ask anything other than to tell you expectations and dress code. There are large crowd management companies that can be amazing resources for the most bazaar locations to work. If you are drug free and intelligent, you will be running a crew in 3 months. I quickly went as an independent contractor as I could charge my own hourly wage. If the work was violent, I'd add a bonus for myself. Don't pay that, and I'll just never work there again. People always paid. A few didn't and begged me to come back. I did a double bonus of $60.

The job were you don’t have one lol

The-Cosmic-Ghost:

Honestly, if you're more of an artistic type, I'd say acting, especially theatre acting. Depending on the agency you could be auditioning for things all over the country, and its not tooo difficult to get unionized once you get started. But in a way you are functioning as self employed so you'll have to be really smart with your finances
